Art / Drawing Software

Art and drawing software. Some instructional, some mechanical. SuperKids' reviewers evaluated content and design, as well as their kid appeal and ease of use of some of the latest programs.

  • Stationery Studio [for ages5 to 11] from FableVision, allows teachers and students to create and print themed writing papers and templates for reports, letters, shape books and creative writing projects.

  • Kid Pix 3 Deluxe [for ages 4 and up] from Broderbund offers a computerized approach to creative art projects. Easy and entertaining for even young kids. Not the type of program that is easily outgrown because it can be used in so many ways.

  • Disney's Magic Artist Studio [for all ages] from Disney Interactive. Outstanding graphics, comical sound effects and a wide variety of usable tools and options will keep users entertained for hours. Although the program is aimed at younger users, even teens will enjoy experimenting with Magic Artist's almost limitless possibilities.

  • Create & Draw in Elmo's World [for ages 3 and up] from Creative Wonders, allows children to create animated virtual menageries, with their own original drawings. Unfortunately, our reviewers felt that drawing with a mouse is simply too difficult for the target age range.

  • Nick-O-Matic Design Studio [for ages 6 and up] from Mattel Media, features the characters from the Nickelodeon cartoon line-up, and functions much like an adult print program of the "PrintShop" variety. Best for craft lovers who like Nickelodeon characters.

  • Pokémon Project Studio [for ages 6 and up] from The Learning Company, features the incredibly popular Pokémon characters, and allows kids to create everything from calendars and party invitations to necklaces, masks, stickers, tatoos, key chains, stationery and more.

  • Toy Story 2 Print Studio [for all ages] from Disney Interactive, allows kids to print everything from bookmarks and banners to greeting cards and growth charts to stickers and trading cards. A fun, rainy day crafts activity.

  • SketchBoard Studio [for all ages] from KBGear, provides a 7"x5" drawing surface and pressure sensitive pen that takes the awkwardness out of computer assisted drawing, and lets kids create professional looking graphics with ease. A nice add-on tool for kids who like to draw.
