Early Learning Software

Early Learning is the catch-phrase in the software industry to describe software designed for 3 to 6, or 4 to 7 year-olds. But with the increasing amount of research now being published that suggests greater learning potential at even younger ages, SuperKids took a look at four titles that are targeted at younger users. None require reading ability; all but JumpStart Toddlers require the ability to use a mouse.

The first two titles encompass multiple academic disciplines; the latter two focus on specific subjects:

In addition to these titles for the very young, SuperKids had previously reviewed several other Early Learning programs; A to Zap!, a multi-disciplinary program built around a spelling model; Gus Goes to Cyberopolis, a captivating and very broad-ranging program; and Marty and the Trouble with Cheese, a mouseless program that uses sound activated commands.

Do we recommend starting pre-school children on computers? Yes, if they are interested, and if you are willing to work with them. Computer software is not a surrogate parent, care-giver, or teacher for these young children.

The key to selecting valuable early learning software for your children, is to match their current level of understanding with the level of the material presented in the programs. Click on the program names to read reviews of the specific titles, or click on "PC" or "Mac" in the price survey column to take a look at current market prices in our Buyers Guide.
