Toddler Software -- The Big Picture

SuperKids' reviewers compared Software programs designed for toddlers - yes, software for childen 18 months to 4 years. Does it make sense to think of educational activities for children so young? Research seems to indicate that it does. We evaluated their content and design, as well as their kid appeal and ease of use. Which is best for your child? • Sesame Street Toddler Learning Basics [2 to 4] from Encore Software is a solid and fun introductory skills program for toddlers and pre-kindergarten age children, covering colors and shapes, numbers and counting, letter and sound identification, and sorting and grouping.

  • Reader Rabbit's Toddler [for ages 18 mos. to 3 years] from The Learning Company provides a visually entertaining introduction to the computer for very young users. Mouse control, shape matching, sing-alongs, and coloring activities will captivate first-timers.

  • Fisher-Price Ready for School Toddler Edition [for ages 18 mos. to 3 years] from Davidson uses Fisher-Price's Little People as guides to 10 activities that include introductions to numbers, letters, mazes, as well as coloring, naming body parts, and matching animal sounds.
  • Sesame Street Toddler Deluxe [ages 2 to 4] from Creative Wonders is a 3 disk set covering drawing, numbers, and letters. This one will be loved by all Sesame Street fans.
  • JumpStart Toddlers
  • [18 mos. to 4 years] from Knowledge Adventure. This program has mouse skill learning activities as well as introductions to letter and number recognition. Best for very young computer novices.

  • Play with the Teletubbies [ages 1 to 4] from Knowledge Adventure, is a marginally educational program that demonstrated little enduring kid appeal in our testing. Lack of interactivity quickly dimmed the initial excitement of our young testers.
