Clifford the Big Red Dog: Phonics [for ages 3 to 6] from Scholastic, promotes letter and sound recognition, associating objects with words, word families, and rhyming.
Reading for Meaning [for ages 8 to 13] from Tom Snyder Productions, teaches reading comprehension skills. Designed primarily for classroom use.
JumpStart Phonics [for ages 3 to 6] from Knowledge Adventure, offers a novel approach to teaching phonics and early reading to young children.
The JumpStart Phonics Learning System [for ages 3 to 8] from Knowledge Adventure, expands on the base program (above) to provide parents with multi-media material for teaching children to read.
Reading Blaster for Kindergarten [for ages 4 to 6] from Knowledge Adventure, takes kindergartners undersea to hunt for treasure and complete familiar looking pre- and early-reading activities.
Reader Rabbit's Reading 4-6 [for ages 4 to 6] from The Learning Company, is a systematic, phonics-based reading program.
Reader Rabbit's Reading 6-9 [for ages 6 to 9] from The Learning Company, is a must-have program for early readers, that uses a carefully sequenced learning progression.
Clue Finders Reading Adventures [for ages 9 to12] from The Learning Company, is a solid reading comprehension builder for older students, cast in an arcade game style program.
3D Froggy Phonics [for ages 4 to 8] from Ingenuity Works, systematically introduces the user to each of the letter sounds, and drills evolving skills through a series of fun games and activities.
Stories & More - Animal Friends [for ages 5 to 7] Combines beloved children's books with a variety of thought provoking activities to introduce kids to the delights of literature while strengthening their developing reading and reading comprehension skills.
Phonics Voyage [for ages 4 to 10] from Arrow Educational Products, does a thorough job of presenting and drilling early reading skills using a pirate theme that may appeal to boys.
Leap into Language 1 [for ages 4 to7] from INNOVA Multimedia , is designed to teach early reading skills. Slow, focused approach will work best for serious, motivated learners, but not with children with short attention spans.
Reading Blaster Ages 7-8 [for ages 7 to 8] from Knowledge Adventure, is designed to drill reading skills of students in the first and second grades. It combines arcade-like fun with a variety of reading drills. It's not wildly unique, nor is it enormously appealing, but as an enjoyable way to help kids solidify their skills, it's quite adequate.
My Reading Coach [for ages 7 to adult] from Mindplay, is aimed at the serious (and mature) students who need instruction in reading proficiency. Older students in need of remedial work may find it helpful.
