As the name implies, SAT Math Engine deals specifically with the Math portion of the SAT and the SAT II. It is designed to offer the extra training and drills many students need before tackling the tests. Unlike other SAT preparation software, it does not explain test-taking strategies, nor does it include any additional information pertaining to the college selection or admission process.

SAT Math Engine includes four distinct sections. The first is a Diagnostic portion, which features comprehensive tests intended to measure the user’s performance in each subject of SAT Math. These tests facilitate initial planning of a review strategy. The program’s interactive Tutorials include lessons in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Coordinate Geometry and Word Problems, as well as a miscellaneous category that covers New Operational Symbols and Probability. The Schedule feature provides the student with a personalized study plan based on his or her performance on the diagnostic tests. Finally, more than a dozen Drill Tests allow for abundant practice to prepare the student to approach SAT Math with ease.

Methodology

This no frills program clearly advocates the "Practice Makes Perfect" adage. The succinct tutorials are a fitting preface to the program’s true strength which is the drill section.

Appeal

Our student testers admired this program’s simple, clear-cut training methods. Although they found the lesson layout to be a bit awkward, with forward movement achieved through a mysterious combination of scrolling and arrow clicking, they noted that, in general, the lessons were meaningful and easily understood. "SAT Math Engine is a great supplement to a basic SAT training program," was one student’s comment. "It’s ideal for students who need additional practice."

SAT Math Engine runs directly from the CD-ROM in Windows 95.

Best for... / Bottom-Line

This program works best for students who have already completed one of the more comprehensive SAT preparation programs and want additional opportunity to rehearse SAT Math.
