Science Software -- The Big Picture

Botany.... Biology.... Physics..... Fun??? Yes!

This month SuperKids' reviewers took a look at some recent titles covering these subjects, and found a surprisingly good collection of programs for home or school use. Each did an excellent job of providing educational value, and although very different in their approaches, all of them were judged to have good or very good "kid appeal" by our student reviewers.

  • Bean There Grown That [for ages 8 to 12] from Curious Company, is a "botany lab in a box" that provides users with everything they need to learn about and experience growing beans from seeds. Since growth takes time, this program is best suited for patient kids.
  • Life Begins [for ages 10 and up] from Quality Multimedia, provides an in-depth look at the subject, making extensive - but tasteful - use of multimedia. Appropriate for use in schools and at home as a fact-based resource for parents and children who seek to understand human reproduction.
  • Virtual Physics: The Eggs of Time [for ages 10 to 15] from Cubic Science, allows users to learn major physics concepts while on a quest to save the future. Motivated students will benefit most.
  • Fun with Science [for ages 7 to 12] from VTechSoft, is a six CD set that offers an inspiring overview of a number of science fields. Because of its reference-like aspects, it makes a nice ‘coffee table’ program, one to have available for those times when hands-on learning and exploration is desired.
