PRESS RELEASE FROM Mattel Interactive Technical Support

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mattel Offers Free Brodcast Removal Utility

NOVATO — JULY 31, 2000 — Mattel Interactive believes in being in the forefront of the privacy debate by doing its best to protect privacy, even in instances where the law does not require it. Due to public concern around the privacy issue, and as part of its ongoing effort to meet consumer interests, Mattel Interactive made a decision to revise its existing Brodcast technology last year and then later elected not to incorporate it in its software products. The technology was installed on Windows® CD-ROM titles published under the Broderbund and The Learning Company business units. No new software since February of this year contains the technology and the server was deactivated.

The technology was designed to provide additional content to its consumers, such as character-related screen savers, product updates and downloads, and special discount incentive programs. Brodcast did not collect personally identifiable information nor did it identify a particular user. The information collected was anonymous and was not connected to the information collected in the software registration. The Company was never in any violation of the law, and acted responsibly at all times.

Mattel Interactive is offering a free uninstall program on its web site (http://www.mattelsupport.com/broadcastpatch.asp) for Windows 95/98/NT users who would like to remove this technology from their system. Users can also email the Technical Support group directly at support@mattelinteractive.com for assistance. Consumers should note "Brodcast" in the subject line to expedite their request.
