ADAM Software: Nine Month Miracle
Reviewed on:
Pentium PC w/8Mb and 2XCD
Ease of Install / Use
Installation was typical ten-step process for a CD-ROM on a Windows 3.1 PC: insert CD-ROM, open Program Manager, select RUN, select BROWSE, select CDROM drive, select setup.exe, read README, select express (6MB) or full (600MB !!) installation, select directory, restart Windows. We went for the express installation, and recommend you do the same. Once installed, the Nine Month Miracle ran without any problems. Movement within the program is relatively intuitive, based on icons and pull-down menus.
Balance of Fun and Education
"Fun" is not the right descriptor for a title like this -- "interest holding" might be more appropriate. And this title is certainly an interest grabber! The 9 Month Miracle takes a narrow aspect of human biology, and weaves a well organized, clear presentation of all most of us will ever want to (or need to) know about life's beginnings.
Overall
This program will be tough to beat for covering this topic. In fact, if we were venture capitalists, we probably would not fund a competing effort! The Nine Month Miracle does an excellent job of explaining pregnancy from conception through childbirth.
This title uses many of the same graphics included in ADAM: The Inside Story, but limited to basic anatomy and the reproductive system. It includes several amazing fetal images, and very good animated cartoon versions of some processes. We would recommend this program for families expecting an additional child, who are looking for a way to help explain pregnancy to older children in the family. We also might give this to someone expecting their first child. The software includes a large number of indexed video clips, covering topics from breathing during labor, to genetic tests.
A word of warning to parents: We would not recommend allowing your children to use this software by themselves the first few times, because it could produce many questions and raise a few concerns. The software begins with a diagram showing the initial physical steps leading to conception, and includes a few segments of video images of childbirth. While presented from an academic, clinical perspective, we would caution you to run through it yourself before considering allowing your child to view it alone. The software includes a special section for younger children, entitled, "A child's view of pregnancy,' which might be considered preferable for younger children.
